पुराने पर, ON THE OLD ONE
Poetry project near mining sites (2023- ongoing)
In my region of Behror, Rajasthan, India, rapid industrialization and construction boom has resulted in the extraction of the river’s sand and surrounding hills for raw materials. It has transformed both the ecological landscape and its cultural fabric. Further, as of now, thirty-one hills of the Aravalli range in Rajasthan have been illegally razed to the ground. This has also led to the loss of wilder species. Unfortunately, environmental degradation in the region continues unquestioned. These changes have led me to contemplate upon these extractive practices in my region that have disabled our ability to see ourselves as part of the larger ecosystem.
As a response to this situation, I have started a project consisting of eco-poetry composed near the mining spaces and public spaces around. This projects aim to use non-human elements as a reference point to generate kinship and empathy. For example, one poem focuses on a lonely stone from a hill whose shadows have been swept away, while another explores the anger and pain of a small, wrecked hill. Additionally, another poem is on the disappearance of the Sahibi River, which originates from these hills. It is worth noting that the most commonly seen texts and images in public spaces are those of political parties and commercial advertisements.
The Poetries are written by me,
